Backpack Journalism on the Move: A Field Trip with Jay Tucker at Creative Artist Agency(CAA), Friday, September 26th.

The Dakar Foundation Apprenticeship program’s latest backpack journalism field trip was more than just five people hauling cameras, mics, and laptops—it was a mobile newsroom fused with a classroom, powered by curiosity. Our crew—Kevin Aguirre, Cardin Campbell, Hector Santos, Cynthia Hood, and Kevin Clark—stepped up to the task and relished the opportunity of a paid assignment to capture stories inside the crystal palace of Hollywood influence: Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

With UCLA’s Jay Tucker lending his insight on the future of media and innovation and conduction the interviews, our crew hit the ground to document the intersections of marketing, creativity, and cultural storytelling in Hollywood. The day’s highlight: sitting down with Megan Crawford, the newly named Visionary Pixel Honoree at the 10th Anniversary Silver Pixels Awards, presented by Hollywood In Pixels.

Crawford, Head of Motion Picture Marketing at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), gave us a front-row look at how she guides A-list clients through theatrical and streaming releases—crafting strategies that balance box office appeal with awards season finesse, all while anticipating shifts in global media consumption.

Before her CAA tenure, Crawford made waves at MGM, where she oversaw theatrical research and helped pioneer early online film marketing campaigns. Today, her work is recognized across the industry for bold creative executions and a forward-thinking approach.

When asked about the honor, Crawford told us:

“Hollywood In Pixels has united a community of forward-thinking marketers to celebrate creative excellence. I am inspired by the work of my marketing colleagues to shape pop culture and support the magic of movies, and it is an honor to be recognized by such a trailblazing organization as Hollywood In Pixels.”

Between setting up interviews, capturing b-roll, and designing meme-ready content to share with partners at Creative Artists Agency, our backpack journalism crew embraced the grind. Every portable tripod and handheld recorder became part of documenting a story about how marketing visionaries like Crawford help shape the narratives that define Hollywood for audiences around the world.

This was more than a field trip—it was a living lesson in how marketing, media, and cultural influence collide, and how storytelling in motion continues to reinvent itself. Thanks again to Jay Tucker, and Megan’s assistant, Cameron Mendez for taking care of us.
