Hollywood / Los Angeles, California

Dakar Foundation for the Performing Arts seeks support to launch Cinema Basel West, a hybrid Hollywood-based cultural festival and exhibition platform dedicated to the art, craft, and future of cinematic image-making. Inspired by the cultural energy of Art Basel, Cinema Basel West will bring together Directors of Photography, camera operators, assistants, editors, colorists, post-production creatives, apprentices, students, and technology partners to showcase work, share techniques, compete in capstone pitch sessions, and engage the public through a physical and virtual gallery experience.

The project will celebrate the historical fundamentals of cinema while advancing innovation in camera systems, optics, lighting, sound, post workflows, sports capture, and immersive storytelling. It will position Hollywood as a visible and inclusive gathering place for the people behind the frame.

We are seeking support from B&H Photo and leading manufacturers across the cinema ecosystem to underwrite production, exhibition, education, prizes, technical demonstrations, student access, and a signature sports cinematography initiative tied to the major global sporting events arriving in the United States over the next three years.

Opportunity and Timing

Cinema Basel West is uniquely timed to activate around a major run of international sports and media milestones in the United States. The FIFA World Cup 2026 final is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, 2026 at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The LA28 Olympic Games are scheduled for July 14–30, 2028 in Los Angeles. These events create a rare multi-year window to train and showcase the next generation of camera and post-production talent while demonstrating the power of advanced capture tools in sports, documentary, broadcast, and cultural storytelling.

At the same time, B&H has publicly highlighted education- and community-oriented giving initiatives, making Cinema Basel West a strong fit for support that combines creative workforce development, public cultural access, and technology engagement.

Project Vision

Cinema Basel West will function as a festival, gallery, innovation lab, and workforce showcase. The event will create a high-visibility environment where professionals and emerging creators exhibit cinematography reels, lens tests, lighting studies, color workflows, sports capture pieces, behind-the-scenes process materials, and capstone films. The experience will be hybrid by design, allowing both in-person and online audiences to engage with installations, panels, screenings, competitions, and sponsored demonstrations.

The event is designed to honor foundational film language — focus, movement, exposure, composition, lighting, story rhythm, and post discipline — while introducing the tools shaping contemporary visual storytelling, including HDR finishing, live sports workflows, AI-assisted tagging and prep, remote collaboration, drone capture, virtual production, and advanced metadata pipelines.

Proposed Program Elements

1. Cinematic Gallery + Exhibition Hall

A curated physical and virtual exhibition of cinematography, camera craft, post-production process, and sports capture work from professionals, apprentices, students, and partner institutions.

2. Camera and Post Innovation Pavilion

A branded demonstration area where sponsors can present cameras, lenses, monitors, lighting, support systems, wireless tools, audio kits, color workflows, storage systems, and post-production solutions.

3. Historical Fundamentals Pavilion

An educational exhibition paying homage to the visual grammar of cinema through lighting diagrams, lens comparisons, camera movement demonstrations, and image analysis from traditional and contemporary workflows.

4. Capstone Pitch and Prize Competition

A juried showcase where emerging creators and apprentices pitch short films, sports-documentary concepts, visual innovation projects, and production workflows for awards, gear support, post packages, and mentorship.

5. Sports Capture Lab

A special track dedicated to documenting and training for high-performance sports storytelling in the lead-up to FIFA 2026, Super Bowl LXI in 2027, and LA28 in 2028. This lab will focus on motion capture, long-lens storytelling, multicamera coordination, sideline and event protocols, athlete storytelling, archival packaging, and post-production for broadcast, documentary, and branded content. The timing aligns with the official event calendars already announced by FIFA, the NFL, and LA28.

6. Hybrid Broadcast + Virtual Gallery Access

Livestreamed panels, artist talks, demonstrations, and capstone presentations made available to remote audiences, classrooms, workforce partners, and sponsor communities.
