Sway & Heather B Bring Karaoke Happy Hour to L.A. — Emerging Artists, Live Energy, and Culture in Motion

Hello gang, before the lights came up in Los Angeles, before the DJ dropped the first record, and before the room turned into a full happy-hour singalong, the night carried the weight of two real hip-hop journeys.

Shout-out Sidney Bazemore, and old friend Brian Samson. This was more than an event. This was Sway Calloway and Heather B bringing decades of culture, credibility, and community into one room — and creating a platform for the next wave of artists to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

Sway Calloway

Sway Calloway’s story begins in Oakland, California — a city with a deep legacy of resistance, rhythm, and independent voice. Before the national interviews, before MTV, before SiriusXM, Sway was part of the Bay Area hip-hop movement, building with King Tech and helping create a bridge between underground rap, freestyle culture, and mainstream media.

Through The Wake Up Show, Sway and King Tech became known for giving real MCs a place to prove themselves. That platform helped elevate freestyle culture and became a proving ground for artists who would later become legends.

Then came MTV.

Sway stepped into homes across America as a trusted voice of music journalism, interviewing artists, covering culture, and helping hip-hop speak for itself on one of the biggest media stages in the world. He joined MTV in 2000, and his work there helped make him one of the most recognizable voices in music television.

From there, Sway continued the journey on SiriusXM Shade 45, where Sway In The Morning became a daily destination for artists, actors, activists, athletes, and culture-makers. The Radio Hall of Fame notes that Sway In The Morning, with Heather B and Tracy G, has aired on Eminem’s Shade 45 since 2011, and Sway was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2020.

And now, Sway is stepping into the next chapter with King Tech through SKT Network — a new streaming app and FAST channel designed to preserve, distribute, and expand authentic hip-hop culture through interviews, freestyles, archives, and original programming.

From Oakland rapper, to MTV correspondent, to Shade 45 anchor, to digital media innovator — Sway’s journey is still moving.

Heather B

And then there is Heather B — Jersey-born, battle-tested, and still authentic.

Heather B. Gardner came out of Jersey City, New Jersey, as a rapper with a voice that was direct, grounded, and unmistakably real. She first gained national attention through hip-hop as part of the Boogie Down Productions family, then became one of the original cast members of MTV’s The Real World: New York, the first season of the groundbreaking reality television series.

That made Heather B part of two cultural revolutions at once: hip-hop’s rise into mainstream visibility and reality television’s arrival as a new storytelling format.

But Heather B never left the culture behind.

She continued as a rapper, personality, host, and voice for real conversation. Her own platform, The Happy Hour with Heather B, reflects the same energy she brings everywhere she goes — honest stories, good people, music, laughter, and a toast to the journey. Her official Happy Hour site describes her path through music, television, film, bartending school, and radio.

From Jersey City MC, to MTV pioneer, to radio personality, to happy-hour cultural connector — Heather B remains one of hip-hop’s most genuine voices.

Transition Into the Event

So when Sway and Heather B brought Heather B’s Karaoke Happy Hour to Los Angeles on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the room was already carrying history.

Held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the event was part of the growing Sway In The Morning Los Angeles takeover — a live-audience experience designed to bring fans, artists, DJs, and creative community members together in real time.

But this was not just karaoke.

This was a DJ-driven happy hour.

This was a live performance showcase.

This was a cultural mixer.

This was a room full of people singing, laughing, networking, and witnessing emerging talent step into the spotlight.

Event Recap

Hosted by the legendary Sway Calloway and the always authentic Heather B, the evening felt like a family reunion, an industry room, and a live concert all at once.

The happy hour featured live sets and special performances from rising artists including Jozzy, Ebony Riley, and Korra Obidi, creating the feeling of an epic karaoke event turned star showcase. Event posts promoted the April 30 Los Angeles Happy Hour with Sway and Heather B and listed those performers.

The live audience brought the energy.

The DJ kept the room moving.

The artists gave the crowd something to remember.

And the hosts created the kind of atmosphere where the line between performer and audience started to disappear.

One of the night’s powerful connections was the presence of talent tied to L.A.’s deep creative ecosystem, including artists and creatives connected to the 1500 or Nothin’ legacy and the production influence of Larrance Dopson. That connection gave the evening a true Los Angeles heartbeat — rooted in musicianship, collaboration, and the sound of what is next.

Culture Moment

What made the night special was not only who was on stage.

It was what the stage represented.

For emerging artists, this was a chance to perform in front of real tastemakers.

For the audience, it was a chance to experience new voices up close.

For Los Angeles, it was another reminder that the city remains one of the most powerful creative hubs in the world — where music, media, technology, and community keep colliding in fresh ways.

Heather B’s Karaoke Happy Hour proved that when culture is handled with care, a simple happy hour can become a platform.

A platform for discovery.

A platform for connection.

A platform for artists who are ready for the next stage.
