The Final Day For Me.: Marvel Zombies, Cinema Technology, and the Road to Anaheim

Wednesday, July 22, I officially reached the fourth and final day of my SIGGRAPH 2026 journey.

It all started on Sunday, July 19, when the Los Angeles Convention Center began filling with artists, engineers, filmmakers, researchers, educators, exhibitors, and creative technologists from around the world. Over the next four days, I watched the conference grow into one of the smartest, most imaginative, and most technologically advanced gatherings I had ever experienced.

Each day brought a new layer of discovery.

There were conversations about DevOps in production, demonstrations of artificial intelligence and real-time graphics, immersive installations from across Asia, visits with the NVIDIA, Dell, HP, and Tripo teams, and countless encounters with people building the tools that will shape the future of animation, cinema, gaming, education, and digital storytelling.

By Day 4, I was excited—but I was also beginning to feel that bittersweet realization that the experience was coming to an end.

There were still so many booths I wanted to visit, so many people I wanted to interview, and so many stories hidden throughout the exhibit hall that I simply did not have enough time to uncover. But there was no slowing down yet.

I returned to the exhibit hall determined to make the most of every remaining moment. One of the biggest highlights of my final day was Autodesk’s Vision Series masterclass, “Animating a Multiverse of Horror for Marvel Zombies.”

Presenters Bert Van Brande, Jordan Vanderzalm, and Nate Barnard of Stellar Creative Lab took us behind the scenes of the production pipeline used to create one of Marvel’s darkest and most visually distinctive animated universes.

The presentation explored how a major animated series moves from concept to completion through the coordinated efforts of artists, animators, technical directors, production teams, and advanced software platforms.

The team explained how Autodesk Maya supported layout, animation, and character performance, allowing the filmmakers to stage action and shape the emotional movement of each scene.

Arnold was used to create the show’s stylized horror aesthetic, including the toon shading, dramatic lighting, eerie environments, and unsettling character designs that helped separate Marvel Zombies from a traditional superhero production.

Flow Production Tracking connected the artists, assets, schedules, and production data, making it possible for different departments to work together across a fast-paced episodic workflow.

OpenUSD also played a role in helping unify the production pipeline, allowing complex digital assets and environments to move more efficiently between teams and applications.

What impressed me most was seeing how every creative choice depended on a carefully connected technical system.

The characters, environments, lighting, animation, textures, and final images may appear seamless on screen, but behind every frame is an enormous amount of coordination, engineering, collaboration, and artistic decision-making.

That is what SIGGRAPH does so well. It reveals the invisible infrastructure behind the images audiences love.

From Marvel’s animated multiverse, I continued exploring the exhibit hall, where I captured vertical, man-on-the-street interviews with representatives from companies developing the next generation of professional production technology.

At the IOI Industries booth, I learned more about advanced camera systems designed for high-performance imaging, machine vision, broadcast, cinema, and specialized production environments.

These are the kinds of cameras and imaging tools that may not always receive mainstream attention, but they play an important role in capturing highly detailed visual information for filmmakers, engineers, researchers, and technology developers.

I also visited EIZO, a company known for professional display and color-management technology.

For filmmakers, editors, colorists, animators, and visual-effects artists, the monitor is not simply a screen. It is one of the most important tools in the creative process. Accurate color, brightness, contrast, and image consistency can determine whether a project looks the way its creators intended across theaters, televisions, mobile devices, and streaming platforms.

That conversation helped connect another important part of the production chain.

A camera may capture the image, and software may help shape it, but filmmakers still need a reliable display to evaluate the final result.

One of my final major stops was the Blackmagic Design exhibition, where the cinema team presented a short-film use case titled “The Last Train.”

The project demonstrated how high-resolution Blackmagic cinema cameras can be combined with Dell and NVIDIA processing technology to support a powerful end-to-end production workflow.

The demonstration also incorporated the latest DaVinci Resolve tools for editing, visual effects, color grading, sound, post-production, and final delivery.

Instead of treating production and post-production as completely separate worlds, the workflow showed how today’s filmmakers can connect camera capture, data management, accelerated computing, editorial, visual effects, color, and finishing within a more unified creative environment.

That kind of integration is especially important for independent filmmakers and emerging production teams. It allows smaller crews to achieve sophisticated results without requiring the infrastructure of a major Hollywood studio.

The most meaningful part of this story for Dakar Foundation was the involvement of apprentice Kevin Aguirre, who served as the writer, director, and producer of The Last Train. Kevin’s participation demonstrated exactly why Dakar Foundation brings apprentices and emerging creative technologists into environments such as SIGGRAPH.

The technology is impressive, but the real opportunity comes when young filmmakers learn how to use these tools to tell their own stories. Kevin’s work represented the bridge between education, apprenticeship, technology, and professional cinematic production.

He was not simply observing the future of filmmaking from the exhibit floor. He was actively participating in it. That is the larger story behind Dakar Foundation’s coverage of SIGGRAPH 2026.

We came to document the sights and sounds of the conference, but we also came to connect our apprentices, educators, mentors, filmmakers, and community partners with the technologies transforming the creative economy.

Over four days, I saw how animation, artificial intelligence, supercomputing, immersive media, virtual production, camera technology, visual effects, professional displays, and real-time production are becoming increasingly connected.

The future does not belong exclusively to animators, software engineers, directors, cinematographers, or artificial-intelligence specialists working separately.

It belongs to creative technologists who understand how all of these disciplines work together. As I walked through the exhibit hall for the final time, I could feel the conference beginning to wind down. The most prominent name and color I’ll remember will the neon green of NVIDIA.

Some exhibitors were finishing their last demonstrations. Attendees were exchanging final business cards. Production teams were capturing the last pieces of footage. Conversations that began casually at a booth were turning into plans for future collaborations.

I found myself wishing I had another day. I wanted more time to visit the booths I had missed, speak with more artists and engineers, capture more interviews, and hear more of the personal stories behind the technology.

SIGGRAPH is simply too large, too layered, and too full of innovation to experience everything in four days.

But maybe that is part of what makes it so special.You leave inspired, slightly overwhelmed, and already thinking about what you will do differently the next time. For me, the end of SIGGRAPH 2026 is not really the end of the story. It is the beginning of the planning process for SIGGRAPH 2027 in Anaheim.

Next year, I want to arrive with an even stronger coverage strategy, a larger team, more apprentices, more scheduled interviews, and more opportunities to connect the innovations inside the conference with classrooms, studios, workforce programs, and creative communities throughout Southern California.

Most importantly, I want to continue showing young people that the future of animation, filmmaking, artificial intelligence, immersive media, and advanced production is not something happening somewhere far away.

It happened right here in DTLA. And there was a place for them inside it.

From Marvel’s animated multiverse to next-generation cameras, professional displays, accelerated Dell and NVIDIA processing, Blackmagic cinema workflows, DaVinci Resolve post-production, and apprentice-led filmmaking, Day 4 demonstrated how connected technology transformed every stage of modern storytelling.

My feet may have been tired, my camera storage may have been nearly full, and my list of unfinished interviews may have been longer than I wanted—but I left the Los Angeles Convention Center energized by what I had seen.

Four days. Four vlogs. Hundreds of creative encounters. And countless possibilities still ahead. Thank you to the artists, engineers, exhibitors, presenters, ACM staff members, shout out to Michelle Ellis, production professionals, apprentices, and creative technologists who made SIGGRAPH 2026 such an unforgettable experience.
